The Ultimate Beginner's Guide to Counted Cross Stitching
Counted cross stitch is a popular and relaxing craft that involves creating simple designs on fabric using a needle and thread. If you're new to counted cross stitch, you may be wondering what supplies you need to get started. Here is a list of essential supplies that every beginner should have:
1. Aida Fabric
Aida fabric is a specially woven fabric with evenly spaced holes that make it easy to count stitches. It comes in different counts, which refer to the number of stitches per inch. For beginners, a lower count Aida fabric, such as 14-count, is recommended as it is easier to see and work with. Aida also comes in other sizes, but the 14-count is one that is normally stocked.
2. Embroidery Floss
Embroidery floss is the colorful thread used to create the design on the fabric. It is typically made of six strands that can be separated and combined to achieve different thicknesses. Choose high-quality cotton floss for best results. DMC has a full line of colors and easily available for purchase.
3. Embroidery Needles
Embroidery needles have a sharp point and a large eye, making it easy to thread the floss through. Choose a needle size that is appropriate for the fabric count you are using. I find that DMC tapestry needles in Size 24 work really well for the counted cross stitch.
4. Embroidery Hoop
An embroidery hoop is used to keep the fabric taut while stitching, which helps ensure even stitches. Hoops come in various sizes and materials, so choose one that is comfortable for you to hold and work with. Depending on the size of your project you may find that you don't even need a hoop once you are able to get your stitching tension even when stitching.
5. Scissors
A good pair of embroidery scissors is essential for cutting the floss and finishing off your stitches neatly. Look for sharp, pointed scissors that are easy to maneuver around your work.
6. Pattern
A pattern is a chart that shows you where to place each stitch on the fabric to create the design. You can find patterns in books, magazines, or online. Start with a simple pattern to practice your skills before moving on to more complex designs. I like the Primrose Cottage and Robin Pickens Designs for beginners. Both are easy to read and they have fun smaller patterns to get started in counted cross stitch. We carry a nice assortment of their patterns here at River's Edge Antiques & Quilt Loft in Hayward WI.
With these essential supplies in hand, you'll be ready to start your counted cross stitch journey. Happy stitching!
